The R1s are getting cheap because they are phasing them out and going to the R2.
In the Intel, there's not much of an upgrade as the 14th gen CPU is only a little faster than the 13th generation, and currently the Nvidia GPUs are the same in the R1 and R2. Overall it's maybe a 5% improvement in benchmarks, so the R1 is basically just as good as the R2 but at 50% off.
Point being, that the Intel R1 is a fantastic deal on sale. [Emphasis on Intel] I just bought one at $1000 off.
Also, if you ever get a warranty full replacement, they'll give you the R2 since they don't have R1s in stock. I know this, since I just got one.
I can't comment on the AMD/Ryzen R1's and R2s. But you can look and see what the difference is in components.

Thanks so much Dr. W for continuously monitoring and posting the good 18 inch deals. I'm so tempted. I'm using a 17 inch Eluktronics r9 3080 laptop and it's good. But I really want a 18 inch of some sort and would be suuuuuper sweet to get some big upgrades like this for CPU/GPU. I can get this down to about $2030 after tax (with 64gb ram upgrade bc why not). So tempted. Got the 10% off too so thank you. I'll be ruminating about this allll day.
Do you know the "low" price of the 4090 models in other brands at 18 inch? I know there aren't too many. I feel like I've seen them for about $2400? I'm really torn bc I don't really need to upgrade but want to. I know once the "older" models phase out we will see less frequent sales and not as low for a while. Man o man. What to do.
Wish I wasn't trying to sell my house and buy another while also budgeting for a wedding in a few months lol.
For current AMEX users it's random who has access to the deal, and I don't think the thing for new customers is happening at the moment. Searched far and wide.

How often do the Dell deals come around on AmEx, where it's something like 10% back on purchases up to $1000, or something like that?
I know it was around about a month ago but I did not have a card at that point. It is not showing up in my list of rewards/cash back at this time.
So maybe next month it might pop back up again?
Just curious as to what the life cycle is like for these Dell deals on AmEx and how often they come back around.
Bought it regardless
