I've been using this for 3 years, and during my first year, I found it frustrating because I didn't understand how it worked. I wasn't sure why my shots kept being inconsistent with pressure levels.

There are 3 main things to keep in mind to achieve consistent shots:

- Adjust the inner grinder level (Go to YouTube, head to this guy's channel - Aju's Cafe, and find his series on Breville's low pressure level). You'll find more explanations from him, but basically, the outer grinder level settings were not sufficient for me. I increased my inner level by 2 extra settings.

- The freshness of coffee beans is one of the primary factors that affect pressure levels. Fresher beans result in higher pressure, and vice versa. So, if I buy a bag of coffee beans and know they're fresh, I'll keep the grinder level coarser because the freshness already provides sufficient pressure. Then, as I reach the end of the bag, I can adjust it to be finer to achieve higher pressure (adjust outer levels only, keeping my inner level the same). Each time, you should only adjust +/- 1 level and observe when the pressure bar reaches your desired level. This, also is the reason why I only buy 1 bag of coffee at a time, and don't forget to check the roasted date on bag.

- One more thing, try to descale/clean the machine frequently (once every 6 months) to avoid mineral buildup.

I hope that helps. I still consider this one of the best purchases I've ever made.
If you really want to get into espresso, please skip this and get Gaggia classic and refurbished baratza sette 270. If you like easy use of breville, get Bambino (plus). Grinder is frustrating to deal with - inconsistent shots, difficult to dial in. I pulled around 1500 shots before I gave up and upgraded to 270 grinder. That really takes this machine to next level.
Same price at seattlecoffeegear they are also throwing in 1 year extended warranty

While this is a great machine from what I've read, it has been ~25$ cheaper multiple times this year. I am waiting for sub500 myself.

In my experience the black sesame rarely goes on sale. This is a great machine for the price. I've owned 2 over the course of a decade pumping out 3-4 shots every day. Had to fix a leak here or there over the years but parts are cheap and maintenance is relatively straightforward. Make sure to follow the cleaning schedule and only use filtered water.

Was able to snap one from one of the BBB stores at $449 when they just started 40% off last month.
This is a great machine though still practicing frothing.

I've just purchased an Oxo burr grinder, and I'm starting to have some issues with my 10YO Technivorm Moccmaster, which I'm willing to replace with same, but I'm also awas the drip can begin to taste stale after some time in the carafe on the hotplate. Is there a machine out there that is suitable for someone who usually drinks 16~20oz drip coffees?

Unfortunately I cannot help you with that. I drink only espresso drinks.

Moccamaster is the best. There should be a setting for half pour or full pour. Otherwise they make smaller sizes. Otherwise a 16 oz pour over is super easy to do manually.

These are fantastic! I had one for over a year, used the crap out of it, and resold it on Craigslist for $450.

It's a great machine, but TBH a nice grinder is going to be $250+ by itself. If you think I'm crazy, let's see you try to "dial in" a coffee bean, wait two days, and try to pull the same cup again with this thing. The large steps just dont cut it, especially if you're extracting a really light roast!
